That’s the final thought in Gary Burr and Vince Melamed’s heartbreaking hit, “What Mattered Most,” which Ty Herndon took to the top of the country charts in 1995.

When the love of his life walks out the door, the song’s protagonist blames himself: “I missed the point, I missed the signs/ So if she’s gone, the fault is mine.”

Speaking to Nashville Songwriters Association International’s Bart Herbison, Burr says he’s heard from plenty of listeners who have found themselves in those shoes.
